Mid Sussex Community Safety Partnership is backing the White Ribbon campaign, which aims to reduce cases of domestic violence.

Representatives from Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Ambulance Service and Mid Sussex District Council came together for White Ribbon Day to show a united front to stop violence against women.

One in four women is a victim of domestic abuse and, on average, two women a week in England and Wales are killed by a violent partner or ex-partner, nearly 40 per cent of all female homicide victims.

The Mid Sussex Community Safety Partnership has produced a leaflet called ‘Are you afraid in your relationship?’ which gives details of local support services. The leaflet is available from Mid Sussex District Council or local town and parish council offices.

MSDC Cabinet Member Chris Snowling said: “It is vital that those who suffer domestic abuse know that help is available and life doesn’t have to be this way. Domestic abuse can take many forms; it is not just restricted to physical attacks. If you are suffering psychological, sexual, financial or emotional abuse then do not hesitate to seek the help that is available.”

Local charity, Rise, offers advice and support to women and children affected by domestic abuse with regular drop-in sessions or pre-booked appointments. For more information call 01403 750499 or visit www.riseuk.org.uk

West Sussex Independent Domestic Violence Advisors are also available on 07834 968539 between 9am and 5pm. Or the national domestic abuse helpline operates 24 hours a day on 0808 2000247.

The Saturn Centre provides services to victims of rape or sexual assault, both women and men. Call 01293 600469 or visit www.saturncentre.org for more information.
