Weekend of marathon challenges on offer

Runners are preparing for a weekend of marathon challenges in Mid Sussex.

Registration is open with Mid Sussex Council for the challenge over three days during the May Bank Holiday.

Beginning with a 10 mile race in East Grinstead on May 4 from East Grinstead Sports Club, the weekend-long event then moves to Haywards Heath for a 10 mile race on May 5. The final section is a 6.2 mile race in Burgess Hill on May 6, starting in Church Walk.

Together, the three races cover a total of 26.2 miles – the classic marathon distance.

Organsiers say each race can be entered individually so people can set a challenge that suits them.

Those who are feeling confident can choose to tackle all three races in three days; others might wish to focus on the shorter Burgess Hill event.

No matter what the goal, everybody is able to sign up online at www.midsussexmarathon.co.uk. Runners wanting to run for a local charity are welcome and there are also team races for local clubs and businesses looking to do something different.

For the future Olympians and those wanting to try out running there are also plans for mile-long junior races on each of the days. These races are separated into those for under 11 years and those between 11 and 14 years. The races can be entered on the day or before using www.midsussexmarathon.co.uk.

Cllr Pru Moore, Mid Sussex District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability, said: “Across the District we are hoping runners get involved, helping raise valuable funds for local charities.

“There’s a real opportunity for local charities to raise some much needed funds through sponsorship, so I hope they will do all they can to encourage runners to take part.

It is also a great fun event and I hope lots of people register to get involved, or come out to support.”

Last year’s event attracted 1300 runners.
