West Sussex County Council tax freeze
The biggest share of the Council Tax bill will be frozen in West Sussex for a third year running.
County council cabinet member for finance and resources, Michael Brown has confirmed that “no new cuts” are planned and the county council is on track to reach the target set for the third and final year of its £79 million savings programme.
However, during last Friday’s budget meeting at County Hall, Chichester members of the opposition accused the Tory controlled council of hitting the vulnerable.
Liberal Democrat Dr James Walsh said: “This parrot cry of ‘no new cuts’ is a nonsense and a fraud and it needs to be exposed to the electorate of this county council.”
However, Mr Brown said the economic climate remained difficult: “Central government support for West Sussex is six per cent lower than last year - disappointing but not unexpected.”
£8.25m has been set aside in the budget for Operation Watershed - projects on highway drainage and environmental improvements.
