He and the Peugeot driver, a 46-year-old man from Emsworth, Hampshire, were both injured and were taken by ambulance to hospital, police confirmed.

The Vauxhall driver, a 59-year-old woman from Waterlooville, Hampshire, sustained serious, potentially life-threatening injuries, and was flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital, police said.

Inspector Stewart Goodwin, of the Sussex and Surrey roads policing unit, said: “The crash has meant closure of the A272 between Petersfield and Rogate. Westbound heavy goods vehicles are being diverted at Midhurst.

“We do not expect to be in a position to lift the closures until mid-afternoon, but thank motorists using the A272 for their patience and understanding.”

He added: “Anyone who saw what happened or noticed any of the vehicles involved being driven shortly before the collision is asked to get in touch, quoting Operation Thor.”
