Haywards Heath mother and son write first dyslexia booklet
A Haywards Heath mother and her nine-year-old son have created a booklet to provide a reliable resource for families learning about dyslexia.
Emma Seymour’s son Elliott was seven when they found out he had dyslexia.
She said: “We noticed at the time that he was not only struggling with his reading and writing but also having difficulties with maths, remember instructions and spelling. After we found out that Elliott had dyslexia we wanted to sit down and talk with him about what dyslexia was.”
At the time Emma said they felt ‘overwhelmed’ and did not know where to start.
“We felt isolated, stressed and in need of reliable information, resources and support. We did our best to answer Elliott’s questions but looking back we would have loved to have a short booklet which we could have shared together as a family,” she added.
Emma and Elliott worked together to write the booklet ‘Understanding Dyslexia’, which was commissioned by The Dyslexia-SpLD Trust, as a positive, and practical resource which could be used by parents and carers.
She said: “It was a very positive experience which we both really enjoyed. We talked about what we really wanted to cover, what was important to communicate and what we had found had helped us.
“It is the first time a booklet like this has been created which has been a really exciting project to work on. Creating a resource which is supported by all the major dyslexia organisations in the UK is a great step forward in terms of increasing awareness and understanding of dyslexia and also providing support to parents and carers.”
Emma is currently looking for a free local community space in Haywards Heath.
She said: “I want to set up a monthly Dyslexia Action support group which would also incorporate the word of the parent champions project, a national project created by The Dyslexia SpLD Trust which supports parents and carers of children with dyslexia and specific learning difficulties.”
Emma has organised a free workshop on Saturday called ‘Dyslexia Practical Strategies’ to empower parents and carers and will be run by a specialist teacher from Dyslexia Action. It will take place from 10am until 12pm in room 2 in Haywards Heath Town Hall in Boltro Road. Pre-booking is essential, to book or for more info contact Emma on 01444628294, or emma-seymour@hotmail.co.uk
