The president of the Burgess Hill Local History Society contacted the Middy to inform of a new look heritage centre opening today at 10am. (Saturday April 12)

Fred Avery wrote: “Ever since 1979, when the Local History Society was formed, the next most important project was to establish the “Heritage Centre”, and Cyprus Hall, owned by the Town Council since 1987, provided a much needed venue.

“On 12th June 1993, cllr. Heather Ross gladly performed the opening ceremony and traditionally cut the tape.

“Except for a few months when building works were carried out, and some of the showcases removed, the” Heritage Centre” has always opened on the second Saturday of each of the summer months from April to September. “The showcases have now been replaced and new exhibits including “World War “displays, not previously shown to the public, will hopefully create an interesting and enjoyable visit.

“This new exhibition will provide an introduction to the history of Burgess Hill and visitors can see what the Society does to promote historical knowledge in schools, other local societies, and to all residents of the town.

“During the coming months, it is hoped to include some articles of interest in the “Middy” from time to time.

“The “Heritage Centre” opens on Saturday 12th April at 10am and other opening dates will appear in our Society’s programme available at the “Help Point”, or by viewing”

Admission is free, and light refreshments will be available. Members will be pleased to answer any questions, and help with research guidance and school projects.
