New proposals for South Chailey retirement complex

Proposals are about to be submitted for a scaled down retirement development at South Chailey.
Lewes District Council threw out plans for Gradwell Park at Gradwell End in June 2012 due to over-development on greenfield land, but the developers behind the scheme, Manifold Investments Ltd and Retirement Villages Ltd, are proposing a smaller scheme comprising a 40 bed care home and 40 care apartments and cottages.
The developers say on their website: “This new proposal represents a much more moderate scheme, scaled down by approximately 30 per cent from the previous application. If approved, we estimate it will provide approximately 69 local jobs.”
The new application is due to be submitted to Lewes District Council by the end of March but villagers who opposed the original scheme on several grounds, including fears over light pollution and the destruction of wildlife, are gearing up for another battle.
One villager, Adam Walker, who lives in Mill Lane near the Greenfield site said: “There is no overriding public need for this development which will be a danger to local school children because of increased traffic.
“Along Mill Lane is Chailey secondary school and the doctor’s surgery. An awful lot of children walk along that lane. A mile up the road on the A275 you have St Peter’s Primary School.”
The developers are asking for feedback after holding an exhibition in South Chailey village hall earlier this month.
Their website is at: Gradwell Park
