A bomb disposal unit was called to Haywards Heath to deal with what turned out to be a harmless rubber ‘grenade’.

Police were called to Bentswood Road around 10pm.

A resident reported that he had found what appeared to be a Second World War grenade in his back garden.

Police officers sent photos to bomb disposal experts, who suspected it was a Mills bomb hand grenade and sent a bomb disposal unit.

The unit arrived around 1.15am, only to find that the object was a rubber replica.
