Burgess Hill sisters win squirrel naming competition at Hassocks garden centre

Two sisters have won first prize in a squirrel naming competition run by a Hassocks garden centre over Christmas.

Erica and Leigh Catty, nine and five, from Burgess Hill, named the five-foot high squirrel who arrived at South Downs Nurseries to visit Santa in his woodland grotto.

The grotto was run by The Budding Foundation which helps disadvantaged children.

Johnny Acorn, as he now goes by, has taken centre stage in the plant department.

Rebecca Houghton-Knapp, from the Brighton Road store, said: “Due to current Covid restrictions, we had to deliver the girls’ prize to them during our normal rounds rather than have a special prize-giving presentation.

“But they were thrilled to receive their goodies from our driver, Cameron Wallis.”
