BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL is at the Half Moon this weekend starting tomorrow (Friday August 21) from 6pm to 11pm. There will be live music on Saturday and Sunday from midday until 11pm on Saturday and 7pm on Sunday. For more details call 01273 890253.

JUMBLE SALE in aid of the St Peter & St James Hospice is, at the village hall, this Saturday (August 22) at 2pm. Jumble donations will be much appreciated at the hall from 9am, also tombola prizes and cakes. Do go along at 2pm if you are looking for a bargain as there are usually lots. CYCLING EVENT starting from Plumpton College takes place this Sunday (August 23); there will be a short warm-up loop, before going over Ditchling Beacon, then to Lewes towards Glyndebourne and Alfriston and then heading for home. There are four distances to choose from 19km, 48km, 96km or 144km; for more details visit http://www.cyclosport.org/.

PLANT SALES Surplus container grown plants, shrubs and trees are being sold by Plumpton College and top produce is assured. To acquire some just visit the College glasshouses on Sunday mornings during August.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH services this Sunday are Holy Communion at 8.30am, Sung Communion at 10.30am and Evensong at 6.30pm. In addition there are daily services (Tuesday to Friday) at 9am and on Saturdays at 10am.

CIRCULAR WALK (7 miles) around Newick is on Saturday August 29 and everyone is welcome to join the Footpath Society. Just meet at Newick Primary School, Allington Lane, (414 209) for a 10.30am start. POP-IN-PARLOUR is open on Tuesday, September 1, at All Saints Church Annex, from 11am onwards for refreshments including lite-bites. Do go along for a chat and meet friends and make new ones.

CROWLINK WALK (7½ miles) is on Wednesday September 2 and will include Bramble Bottom, Ringwood Bottom, East Dean and Crowlink village. Meet members of the Footpath Society at Crowlink Car Park, N.T. off the A259, (just before East Dean) at 10.30am and take a picnic lunch with you. MOBILE LIBRARY will be at the village hall car park on Wednesday, September 2, between 1.45pm and 2.15pm. Do use this service it has books for adults and children, DVDs, audiobooks and reference materials .It also has a wheelchair lift so is accessible to all.

PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL meets on Wednesday, September 2, in All Saints for worship at 7.30pm, which will be followed by a business meeting in the Annex.

CHURCH CHOIR meets on Thursday, September 3, at 7.30pm in All Saints, Plumpton Green to prepare for Harvest Festival. New members of the choir are much needed and will receive a warm welcome; if you would like to know more before attending do call the Rector on 01273 890570.

HORSE RIDE Alan Robinson is again hosting the sponsored Heart of Sussex ride across his land at Plumpton Green in aid of the British Heart Foundation on Sunday September 6. The course is suitable for all level of rider and horse or pony. It is over ten miles of beautiful countryside, with an occasional road crossing. It combines a mixture of bridleways and private land and has some optional jumps. Entry costs Riders £23, on the day £28 (subject to availability), Leading Rein £10 and Dog Walk £5. All riders must fill out a registration form at https://www.bhf.org.uk/. The start will be from St Helena Farm, Plumpton Green, and times will be allocated on a first come, first served basis with riders leaving from 9am to 1pm. There will be rosettes for all riders and prizes will be awarded in the over 16’s, under 16’s and leading rein categories for the most sponsorship paid in on the day and the most overall sponsorship received by the organisers by Wednesday September 30. VOLUNTEER MARSHALLS are needed of at the crossing points to ensure the safety of the riders taking part in the Heart of Sussex Sponsored Horse Ride on Sunday September 6. WILDLIFE CAMERA The Wildlife & Habitat Group has bought two wildlife trail cameras that can be set up to automatically take night-time photographs. The cameras are available to members of the Group to borrow. Membership is open to anyone living in Plumpton or East Chiltington and costs just £5 a year per household. ST MICHAELS CHURCH has successfully secured a grant of £80,300 from the Government’s Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund to address urgent roof repairs that will ensure it is weathertight, safe and open for use. The final submission to the National Heritage Memorial Fund is being prepared for submission by October14. Once the submission is agreed the fundraising for £25,000, the final figure, will start. That said it is hoped that the remedial works will commence in November with the roof repairs starting next March.

BUS SERVICE The TS4 Bus Service, operated by the SussexBus.com, from Ditchling Beacon to Tesco’s in Burgess Hill runs on Wednesdays leaving the Half Moon at 11am and Plumpton Green at 11.05am and returning from Tesco’s at 1.10pm, with pick up and drop off at all bus stops along the route. To keep this service operating please use it as, I understand, the Monday service to Tesco’s was withdrawn through lack of use.
