The Conservatives have taken Lewes from the Lib Dems, capping off a stunning night of general election results.

Norman Baker had been MP for the area since 1997 and had a majority of more than 8,000 votes from 2010, but this was overturned by the Tories and new MP for Lewes Maria Caulfield.

Ms Caulfield polled 19,206 votes to Mr Baker’s 18,123 out of a turnout of 72.4 per cent.

She said: “I would really like to thank my campaign managers who worked so hard for so long, but most of all my thanks go to the people of Lewes for placing their trust in me and my promises to them.”
