A power cut left 602 Haywards Heath homes in darkness today after an ‘almighty explosion’.

Robert Hurst, for Haywards Heath, said he lost power in his home after power supply unit exploded, creating a cloud of smoke 60 or 70 feet high.

UK Power Networks apologised to 602 customers in the Bolding Way area of Haywards Heath who experienced a power cut from 6.59am today (March 3).

“The problem was caused by a fault on a piece of equipment at a substation forming part of the electricity distribution network in the area,” a spokesman said.

“Our engineers restored supplies to 328 customers at 7.55am, to one customer at 8.05am with the final 273 customers having supplies again at 12.25pm.”

Mr Hurst added that UK Power Networks reacted quickly to the problem, and were ‘very helpful’.
