A fault with a level crossing left pedestrians and road users in a ‘dangerous situation’.
Lights continued to flash at Crawley High Street level crossing this afternoon despite the fact the barriers were up and trains had passed.
A concerned driver said he was travelling through the area at about 1pm.
“When the train had passed the barriers then went up but the lights remained flashing as if another train was coming,” they said.
“A lot of people wouldn’t wait, that was the problem.
“It was a very dangerous situation where someone could have been killed.”
Network Rail confirmed there had been an issue and a team of engineers were working to fix it.
The barriers have been lowered while the work is carried out and police are diverting traffic and pedestrians via alternative routes.
A spokesman for Network Rail added: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to have the crossing open as soon as possible.”
