'˜Traffic chaos will get worse because of new homes'

Photo journalist John Jochimsen says the problem is in Worthing Road, Southwater, where ‘pinch points’ reduce the roadway to one lane.

He says developers are currently building 250 new homes in the area which will lead to yet more traffic.

“It’s causing chaos at the moment and the pinch points are a blooming nuisance. People are hooting and tooting all the time.

“If you have an extra 250 people trying to get to work and mothers trying to get their kids to school it will cause even more absolute chaos.

“You get traffic jams there at the moment and people start yelling because they’re frustrated.

“I can see that it’s going to be terrible in the not-too-distant future. It’s going to get worse.

“It’s ridiculous when this road opens up where the new houses are, cars will have to go both ways through the pinch points.”

Mr Jochimsen, 87, said he had complained to West Sussex County Council which is responsible for highways.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “This work is related to the Berkeley Homes development in Southwater. We are monitoring the situation closely.

“There is a legal agreement in place to offset the traffic impacts from development.”
