Intrepid St Catherine’s Hospice volunteers went trekking in Vietnam last Saturday (April 9) to raise money in the charity’s first overseas challenge.

The fifteen fundraising explorers, known as the ‘Hanoi Hikers’, are trekking though remote countryside in Northern Vietnam until Sunday (April 17) to raise £50,000. For every day they walk, they are paying for five hours of community care, allowing a patient to be looked after in the comfort of their own home.

Among the volunteers are Hassocks residents Nancy Conway and Naomi Southcombe, as well as Linda Parker of Balcombe.

Nancy is taking part in the trek after seeing the difference hospice care can make. Before jetting off, she said: “After losing family and friends, who were cared for by hospices, I wanted to give something back. I’m glad to be able to make a difference to people’s lives and I’m looking forward to meeting new people and hearing their stories, whilst seeing a different part of the world.”

Last year supply teacher Naomi walked 20 miles for charity, which she felt was great preparation for Vietnam. She also helped with the hospice’s Midnight Walk.

Preparing for the trip, she said: “I’m looking forward to the challenge of trekking a big distance and raising money for St Catherine’s.”

Hospice coffee shop volunteer Linda was excited for a challenge of a lifetime.

Before the trek, she said: “This is my first charity event and way out of my comfort zone. I’m very grateful for all the fantastic support and I’m determined to make it a success. I’ll be thinking of special family and friends along the way.”

St Catherine’s Hospice marketing executive Robin Lord said: “We’re really impressed that so many of them have not only met their targets but beaten them by a long way. We’re absolutely bowled over by what they’ve achieved.”

The group are trekking in the Pù Luông Nature Reserve area of Vietnam and staying with local families in traditional stilt houses.
