She started teaching in East London and in the late 1970s she took a break from teaching and followed another dream of being a publican.

Soon after she had her only son and the family moved to Sussex in 1984, where they opened a clothing shop in Church Road, Burgess Hill - now Hunters Estate Agents.

It became clear very quickly that Mrs Thompson could not suppress her love for teaching and joined London Road School where she had many happy memories of being a year 6 teacher. She then followed the school onto London Meed teaching all age groups.

Mrs’ T’ as she was a affectionately known by many, spent over 12 years teaching the local children. She never saw teaching as work but described it as a vocation. Her son James describes how she loved each and everyone of the children as her own and would do everything she could to make sure they were safe and that school was fun and exciting, whilst making sure that children knew right from wrong.

He remembers ‘a truly wonderful lady, with a huge heart who always put others first.’ He said: “She will always be someone he will aspire to and hopes there are many happy memories held by people locally.”
