Firefighters were working at a hotel fire for about 12 hours yesterday (Wednesday August 5).

Six fire engines were called to the blaze at Alexander House Hotel, in East Street, Turners Hill, just before 4am.

The fire started in the basement kitchen, which was destroyed by the flames and smoke.

Nearly half of the ground floor of the building was damaged, mostly by smoke. The first, second and third floors were unaffected.

The final firefighters left at about 4pm.
