It caused traffic chaos with the village becoming gridlocked just before school pickup time.

Resident Alan Stainer described the nightmare as he went to pick up his children from Storrington First School.

He said: “It was absolute chaos. Traffic was at a standstill because people are using Spierbridge Road as a cut through to get past it.

“The police actually came outside the school to move traffic on as with everyone cutting through at pick up time it was going to be dangerous.

“We have got evening clubs for the kids tonight but we may have to cancel them as we won’t be able to get through the traffic.”
