Lindfield Parish Council chairman Will Blunden said: “I’m disappointed, it’s mindless, such a pity.

“Recently they’ve kicked in fencing panels, upturned salt grit holders, and last night ripped off the ornamental litter bins and hurled them in the pond, by the ducklings.”

The vandals targeted Lindfield High Street after England lost their second World Cup group game 2-1 to Uruguay.

“It’s been happening this week since the football started,” the councillor added.

“I’d hate to see what they would have done if England had won.”

Deputy parish clerk Iain Mclean said it is an ongoing ‘pattern of low grade vandalism related to the current football’, and the local PCSO is looking into it.
