New homes earmarked for old Dairy Crest site in Burgess Hill

Home hunters could soon be living on the site of the old Dairy Crest depot in Burgess Hill.

Councillors are considering a scheme for the building of ten flats in two blocks at the site at the town centre end of Mill Road.

Dairy Crest pulled out to concentrate on services from other depots.

Amended plans for the site were discussed by the South West Area Planning Committee on Thursday evening at the Mid Sussex District Council chamber at Haywards Heath.

A few objections were raised, including a claim that insufficient parking would affect road safety.

There were also concerns that allowing the flats might affect any plans for 30-minute waiting areas down Mill Road.

Burgess Hill Town Council had told the district council that the scheme should be refused.

In its response to the application it said the scheme would be an over-development of the site and thought there would not be enough parking for ten homes.

Case officer Stuart Malcolm said in his summary of the application that it was considered acceptable in design, size, scale and layout.

And he said the loss of business space was acceptable, bearing in mind Government advice on changes to housing use where there was a need for extra housing.

But councillors deferred a decision because of concerns about three of the flats not meeting space standards.
