TOY AND RAIL COLLECTORS FAIR: is this Saturday (April 30) from 10am to 4pm at the Bluebell Railway’s Horsted Keynes Station. There will be stalls on the platform and a marquee within the station car park with railway artefacts and model railway equipment. Admission ticket costs £3 per person which covers both Horsted Keynes Station and the marquee.

WILD ART WEEKEND is at Sheffield Park and Garden from this Saturday (April 30) to Monday May 2 from 11am to 12.30pm each day. This is an opportunity to create masterpieces from natural materials and tick off one of the National Trust list of 50 things to do before you are 11 ¾ . The cost is £3 a child and booking is essential on 01825 790231.

ANNUAL CHAILEY LINK WALK is on Monday May 2 starting at 10am from the North Chailey Sports Ground where route details will be available. The walk is just over six miles but if required can be reduced to four miles by means of a short cut. At this time of the year the scenery is particularly beautiful, beginning by crossing Memorial and Pound Commons then proceeding through ancient woodland, with a profusion of bluebells and views to the South Downs. At the finish there will be the usual barbecue; provided free to all participants on completion of the walk. CHAILEY WI: next meeting is, at the village hall, on Tuesday May 3 at 7.45pm and will be the annual Resolutions meeting. It is always interesting to see which resolutions are debated before being taken forward to the National Annual Meeting in October so do come along and join in. Also in May the group are marking the Queen’s 90th birthday by going out for a celebratory cream tea. Guests and prospective members are always most welcome; there is a nominal charge of £3. BLUEBELL WALK: at Sheffield Park and Garden is on Wednesday May 4 from 10am to12pm. These guided walks are a chance to explore exclusive areas of the garden and parkland and enjoy this natural wonder. The cost for adults is £5 and booking is essential on 01825 790231

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING: takes place on Friday May 6 in the village hall. All residents interested are invited for 7pm to enjoy a drink with Councillors and other residents before the meeting begins at 7.30pm Inspector Rob Lovell of Sussex Police has been invited to attend and brief residents on the significant changes to the system of Community Support Officers and the introduction of Area Teams for policing. Following the Village meeting on April 29, mentioned above, the Steering Group ‘Shaping Chailey’ will report on the development of the Neighbourhood Plan.

SPRING PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS: are on Saturday May 7 and 11 from 9.30am to 12.30pm at Sheffield Park and Garden. The cost is £25 and includes tea or coffee and cake. Booking is essential on 01825 790231.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE BLUEBELL RAILWAY: want to find out more? A ‘Find Out More Day’ is taking place on Sunday May 8. Anyone, skilled or unskilled, who can offer a day a month or more to the Railway are invited to ‘find out more’ about volunteering in our various departments. And if under 16, you can gain experience in the 9F Club. BAT WALK: at Sheffield Park and Garden takes place on Thursday May 12 from 8pm to 9.30pm. The cost for adults is £6 and children £3.50. Have a go at detecting the bats living in the garden and parkland while learning more about them. Booking essential on 01825 790231

SOUTHERN AT WAR WEEKEND: is taking place on May 14 and 15 at the Bluebell Railway. There are too many events to list but they include military vehicles , afternoon band shows, concert party shows throughout the day, Sussex Home Guard Displays including firearms, bayonet practise and parades vehicles, Spitfire Display (on Sunday only) and Harley Davidson motorbike display (also Sunday only). THE RED LAMPS: are at Brighton Fringe on Monday May 16 at 11.30am at the Pavilion Gardens Café (BN1 1UF), which is a beautiful outdoor garden setting, and all are welcome to attend this free production. The Red Lamps are an integrated group of musicians from Chailey Heritage School who will be performing live, using Soundbeam technology: intercepting ultra-sonic beams using movement. Their live performance will consist of both improvised and pre-recorded material.

HER MAJESTY the Parish Council have resolved to mark the queen’s ninetieth birthday by planting a Red Oak, Quercus rubra, on Chailey Green. Full details will appear on the parish website (www.chailey.org).

DOUBLE YOUR MONEY CHAILEY SPORTS CLUB APPEAL: The Sports Club and Parish Council have spent much of the last year working on the ambitious £55,000 project to repair and refurbish the Pavilion at the Sports Ground. They have secured funding of close to £40,000 and are now looking to raise the final amount needed to ensure they meet their goal of providing a facility that will serve the various sports clubs, and everyone in the local community, for the next 20 years. They are now asking you, the local businesses and local residents, to make donations to help them meet their ambitious goal. Chailey residents of many years and sporting enthusiasts, Rob and Ann Tillard, have very generously offered to match all monies raised in this appeal £ for £ up to a maximum of £5,000. So for every £100 given by you the Sports Club will receive £200. Every contribution will be gratefully received so please give what you can to what is a great local cause. When the work is done all those who have contributed will be invited for a drink at the refurbished Pavilion to see what has been done and celebrate the official re-opening of the Pavilion. This is your Pavilion for the benefit of the children and members of your village to play sport. Please give generously to enable them to continue to enjoy sports.
