Ella Bacon, Ione Searle and Chloe Sweetland from Hurst College have become the first all-girl team to win the WorldWise Geographical Association Quiz.

The team led the event from start to finish, outshining competitors from state and independent schools across Sussex with their far-reaching knowledge about all things on land and water.

“A lot of it was based on teamwork” said Ione, “and I think that’s where we were strongest; we all listened to each other and supported one another throughout.”

Teams faced six rounds in total at Dorothy Stringer School, ranging from picture and speed to maps and general knowledge. Although it appeared that other schools might challenge the girls’ dominance during the competition, five points were ultimately enough to take the victory.

Team captain, Ella, said, “We were really surprised after some rounds to see that we were leading, especially when we had to identify UK landmarks. In my opinion” she laughed, “Old Trafford is not a UK landmark!”

Asked whether any particular questions were made easier by the work set for their GCSE Geography, which all three girls will sit this summer, Chloe said, “There were quite a lot of questions on fieldwork, rivers and continents which we’ve being working on recently. We gained maximum points from those.”

The girls received winners’ badges and book vouchers for their efforts while the trophy is soon to be added to the College’s cabinet.
