The ladies of Balcombe WI, suitably hatted, celebrated the Centenary of the National Federation of Womens’ Institutes with a delicious lunch buffet at The Balcombe Club.
Lady Denman , who was the first National Chairman of the WI, lived in Balcombe, commissioned the building of the Victory Hall, and its magnificent murals.
She also ran the Womens’ Land Army from Balcombe Place during the Second World War, and was the grandmother of Mrs. Penny Greenwood, who still lives in the village.
Balcombe WI are due to celebrate their own Centenary in 2017.
