Mid Sussex Older People’s Council, a local charity, held a housing conference this month in Lindfield to find out from The Mid Sussex District Council’s Housing Enabling Manager what options exist for older people (defined by West Sussex County Council as aged 50+) living in Mid Sussex and how to access them. Joan Moorhouse, a resident in retirement housing, gave a presentation on the pros and cons of this.
Increasingly, MSOPC has heard from older people living in Mid Sussex the difficulties of finding affordable suitable housing to meet their needs as they change.
In a lively question and answer session after the presentations, the meeting identified a distinct lack of ground floor 2 bed-roomed housing on bus routes near essential facilities. MSOPC will be working with MSDC to see how the situation can be improved.
Mick, a local Affinity Sutton resident and an MSOPC volunteer, took the photographs of the event. The Conference is one of four events for which MSOPC has received funding from Affinity Sutton for. One of these is to be held later this year in the Hurstpierpoint area about adaptations and other help to stay living independently at home, the next will be held in East Grisntead in February next year and will focus on preparing for later life and the last is on community safety in Burgess Hill on Tuesday 15 March, with Katy Bourne as the keynote speaker. For information/to express an interest in attending/book a place at any or all of these three events visit www.msopc.org.uk, email firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a message on the answerphone 01444 242760.
