David Sawyer President of the Rotary Club of Haywards Heath and several of the club’s members recently presented illustrated dictionaries to senior pupils at five junior schools in the town.

The dictionaries donated by the club help students explore words and their meanings, are an aid to them working independently, and create a greater interest in language and comprehension. The club distributes the 288 page Usborne Illustrated Dictionary 4 Life which includes 1,000 illustrations, 10,000 entries and 20,000 definitions printed in full colour.

The photographs show the head teacher of Bolney CofE Primary school, Sharon Allen, with pupils, and Mrs Walling, deputy head at Warden Park Primary Academy with year 6 students. Club members Tim French, Alan Jenkins, Rod Wafer and Tim Briggs, who helped organise the distribution, were also present.

Also shown is Helen Townsley, deputy head of St Joseph’s primary school with the school’s head boy and head girl.

Also pictured is Dr Hildi Mitchell, deputy head of Northlands Wood School, with two House Captains.

Dictionaries were also given to St Wilfrid’s school.

Dictionaries are distributed by many Rotary clubs in the UK. Between 2007 and 2010 clubs donated some 200,000 dictionaries, mainly to year six primary school children as leavers’ gifts to stimulate an interest in language, books and reading.
