Sally Baldwin, from Uckfield and a PE teacher at Warden Park Academy, is now in her second year of competing in triathlon. It has been a rapid assent from total novice to one of the best Age group triathletes in the world.
Last year saw Sally finish the season with a 4th place at the World Championships in Canada. This year is looking like being another good year with some excellent results being achieved early on in the season. These include:
n 4th in duathlon European championships in Madrid
n 2nd in British triathlon championships
n Won Ardingly triathlon out right (beating all the men as well!)
n Won Goodwood duathlon
n Won Ardingly swim the lake
n Won Thorpe Triathlon age group event
The events that Sally has highlighted as key competitions for her this year are the European Triathlon Championships in Geneva and The world Championships in Chicago.
Triathlon is a massive sport in the UK and growing all the time. In 2014 nearly 200,000 people took out membership with The British Triathlon Association allowing them to compete locally, nationally and internationally. World wide the figures run to millions which makes what Sally has achieved so far an astonishing feat.
For someone to make it in a sport like this takes more then just the ability to train hard and compete hard. It takes the support of others around you. Mr Jonathan Morris, head teacher at Warden Park, has been very supportive of Sally’s triathlon. Recognising that her achievements can inspire some of the students to go out and ‘do it’ for themselves.
He says “ In many ways Sally’s performance epitomizes the qualities and aptitudes we are developing in our students, determination, resilience and a positive mind set all of which can lead to world class performance”
Sally also has been able to attract some sponsorship to help fund her costs. Tim French (MBE) of “Its Magic” was one of the first to sponsor to help Sally last year, giving her money to go to Edmonton where she finished 4th in the world.
Tim is kindly again helping this year contributing towards the cost of getting sally to Chicago (World Championships).
Sally is also lucky to have the support and sponsorship of Phil Todd the owner of BSE 3D Consulting Engineers and a parent governor at Warden Park, who is also contributing towards expenses. Outside of the need of direct funding and sponsorship it is important to keep yourself fit and healthy.
This is taken care of be the team at Sussex Osteopathy in Burgess Hill.
They kindly offer Sally free massage and physio sessions to try and keep her injury free. Also Barkers garage kindly keep Sally’s car fault free so she can drive herself to her races! Last but not least, Places for people have given Sally a years membership to help with her training.
