Based on the speaker’s own researches in the Arundel Castle, Petworth House and County archives, it traces the history of the industry back to mediaeval times and relates why chalk was so important to the local economy, why great landowners were so anxious to exploit it and the part it played in the development of the local canal and navigation systems. Members £1, non-members £2.50 including tea or coffee and biscuits.
Wivelsfield Films: will be screening Florence Foster Jenkins (PG) on Sunday September 18 - Starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant
A highly acclaimed film based on a true story of Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) a 1940s New York socialite who dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he’s facing his greatest challenge yet.
Doors/bar open 7pm - film starts 7.30pm. Tickets available from Wivelsfield Post Office, the Cock Inn, on line from www.wivelsfield.com or (if available) at the door. The bar is open before the film and during the interval - enjoy the home made cakes and ice creams.
