This included overhauling and putting the church clock in good working order and the operating mechanism for the bells, and the refurbishment of the stained glass in the east windows of the church.

This work has now been completed.

Following numerous fundraising events during the preceding three years, on Sunday morning April 17 the target figure was passed by the receipt of £1,081 from Balcombe’s amateur dramatic group, the Victory Players.

This money was raised as a result of a ‘Wine Man’s Bluff’ evening which the Victory Players put on in Balcombe’s Victory Hall. A capacity audience was invited to sample different wines.

For each wine three actors each gave a different description of its country of origin, year, grape variety, price etc.

One description was true and the other two false.

Each member of the audience, having tasted a wine, tried to identify which description was the true one, and marked a score card accordingly.

Nobody got all six right, and only one person, Mr Terry Deaville from Horley, correctly identified five out of the six wines.

A meal of lasagne with garlic bread & salad, followed by chocolate brownie & ice cream was then served.
