As the former headteacher of St Peter’s C of E Primary School, Ardingly, I write to point out some inaccuracies in your report on page 36 of the August 11 Middy.

The new school building was indeed begun in 1986 by Hilton’s of Haywards Heath and they progressed well until the company went into receivership after the 46 weeks reported, with the roof and interior unfinished.

Work ceased for some months while WSCC sought a new builder to take over the work, much to the disappointment of the Year 6 pupils who had looked forward to the summer term in a brand new building.

The work recommenced after several months and was finally completed and ready to move into after the autumn half term holiday 1987.

It was delayed again for two weeks due to the great storm which had brought down power lines and blocked the lane to both old and new schools.

Finally, the school re-opened on 1st November 1987 to much relief and celebration by everyone from governors, staff, PTA and of course, the children.
