LETTER: Show commitment to our community

Have your say

I refer to recent letters and articles about the plans for the future of the Martlets and the loss of the Martlets Hall.

Much of the anger and disappointment at the loss of the hall without a top quality replacement has been directed at Mid Sussex District Council. However surely some of the anger should be directed at the property company.

They will be investing £65million to make substantial profits for their shareholders and no one can complain about that. The profits will be large with over 140 new flats, a cinema and hotel. It does seem fair in these circumstances that they feel an obligation to our community and make an effort to build a partnership.

It may be thought that a payment to the community of £3-4million would be reasonable. This would enable us to plan for the replacement of the Martlets with an iconic arts and entertainment venue. It would allow us to approach other sources of funding from grants and from approaches to businesses for sponsorship.

So come on New River, show your commitment to our community even if it is at a small cost to your shareholders.
