Four dogs, four cats, a kitten and parrot were discovered at Shelia Hocking's house in New Road, Shoreham.
Mrs Hocking, her daughter Rosette, 25, and son Richard 28, deny charges of animal cruelty.
The family were charged after RSPCA inspector Anthony Pritchard made several visits to the Hocking's home from 2005 to 2007 and found various animals in good condition.
On July 31, 2007, he visited with two RSPCA colleagues, a vet and two uniformed police officers after a neighbour had taken two kittens to a veterinary surgery.
The trial is taking place at Worthing Magistrates' court.
