A PUBLIC consultation on plans to turn King's Manor Community College, Shoreham, into an independent academy has been launched.
It will be run by Dame Jocelyn Brown and Dawn Hill, of DJB Consultancy, and will seek the views of people throughout the community.

Two public meetings will be held at King's Manor on Thursday, October 16 – one for teachers and staff from local schools, at 4pm; another for parents of current and prospective students and the community at 7pm.

The key areas for consultation on the new academy are the admissions policy, its ethos, curriculum and specialism, how the school will be governed, its name and how it can best serve the community.

Academy plans

The proposed academy would open in September, 2009, sponsored by the United Learning Trust, a not-for-profit subsidiary of the United Church Schools Trust.

It would be co-educational, free of charge and open to 1,550 students aged 11 to 19 and of all faiths, or no faith.

The proposed specialism is humanities, with English as the lead subject, with a theme of business and enterprise throughout the curriculum.

The academy would work with the University of Chichester as its higher education partner.

Responses

Welcoming the consultation, Peter Griffiths, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for education and schools, said: "I am delighted that the plans for the academy in Shoreham are now moving forward.

"This is an exciting time and I hope as many people as possible will get involved in this consultation to have their say on how the proposed new school could be developed."

Responses to the consultation will be considered by the United Learning Trust and West Sussex County Council before the Secretary of State for Education's approval is sought for the academy.

It is anticipated that a final decision on the academy will be made in April, 2009.
