Fine conditions two weeks ago meant that vital repairs to the bridge carrying the trunk road over the railway next to Arundel station progressed well, raising the possibility that the job could be finished earlier than scheduled.

This week the Highways Agency said further dry weather this weekend and during the next closure, from October 10-13, could enable the work to be completed without further shutdowns scheduled for later in October/November.

However, wet conditions could lead to the extra weekend working being necessary.

Some businesses in Arundel reported takings down by up to 60 per cent during the last closure, in spite of special offers, and their efforts to highlight the message that while the A27 might be closed.

The town is still very much open for business.
