Remarkable stand almost wins it for Ansty in mixed weekend

A remarkable stand of 87 by keeper Ben Towler and skipper Glenn Anson almost saw the home side to an incredible win against Lindfield.

Lindfield having been put into bat scored a respectable 186-7 in their 53 overs with fifties from Tem Hodson (76) and Shane Wilson-Yelverton (50) who struck out after losing early wickets. Jake Wilson was once again the most successful of Ansty’s bowling taking 4-52 with Anson taking a couple.

Ansty’s reply developed into a struggle for runs as the visitors bowling was lively and with wickets falling regularly, last pair, Towler and Anson found themselves needing a further 108 to win. As time went on this pair became more confident and with the Lindfield bowling attack becoming frustrated a couple of catches went begging that spurred on the home side. However it was not to be as Anson was finally caught in the covers for 34, just 21 runs short. Towler finished on 58no.

2nd XI

Haywards Heath’s batsman Charlie Amey scored 45 and Shahed Shams 30 as the home side reached 180 -9 at the close of their innings. Megan Janman took 4-30, Will Wright 3-27 and James Wilson 2-65. Ansty’s reply started well enough with Tommy Green top scoring on 59. Stephen Rusling chipped in with 22 and George Martin 16 but with wickets tumbling, last pair Tom Hadfield and Morgan Lapina-Amarelle held out for the draw at 150-9

3rd XI

The 3rd XI’s first win of the season came at home against Lindfield IV in a high scoring match.

Batting first Lindfield’s Graham Page (54) and Phil Tolhurst (54no) scored freely with the home side using eight bowlers in an attempt to curtail the runs. Lindfield reached 202-3 at the close of their innings.

Skipper Adam Butler and Tom Smith (34) set about the run chase and put on 80 for the first wicket. Good scores from Luke Wood (28) and Lucy Western (27) saw Ansty close in for a much needed win and with Tom Tyers striking a four Ansty 3 had their first win of the season. Butler scored 65 in his knock. Graham Page took 3- 35.

4th XI

Ansty’s attack proved difficult for home side Ardingly 2. Phil Herbert was the pick of the bowling taking 6-25 in 12 overs. Only Mayuresh Patil looked at all comfortable and went on to score 50 but Ardingly’s inning closed 114 all out. Peter Fowles and Rob Targett each took two wickets.

Ken Chapman and Steve Jarvis opened the Ansty innings and had put on 52 when Jarvis was bowled for 24. Chapman went on to 43 and with Jack Bilbruck 17no and Chris Layton 12no Ansty notched up their win by 6 wickets. Iain Gordon took 2-11.
