Dashing Dave's a record breaker

Six Olympos Marlins Masters travelled to Cardiff for the Masters and Senior Age Group (50m) championships last weekend and set four new British records.

Swimming as Sussex Martlets and joined by Laura Hoodless from Hastings, they competed against swimmers from all over Britain in a brand new 10-lane international pool.

In all there were 45 records set, including two world and five Europeans.

Dave Warren was in top form, way out ahead in all his heats to take six golds. He broke the British record for his 35-39 age group in the 200m freestyle, clocking a magnificent 55.24sec, and followed that with other British records in the 200 and 400 individual medley.

Stephen Braine is also an Olympos Marlins Master with a new British record, in the 50m butterfly for his 55-59 age group. He snatched victory in a thrilling finish.

In all, Olympos Marlins won 16 golds, 10 silver and four bronze, with countless personal best times.

Liz Griffin, travelling there and back in one day for a 50m breaststroke event, excelled herself. She entered at 42.50 but won her heat with 38.38,

Griffin and her team-mates watched the later heats with rising expectation that there might be a gold for her, as indeed there was. As she is relatively new to Masters competition, to be national champion now promises much more success for the future.

Alison Gwynn is four times a national champion, taking gold in the 200m freestyle in a personal best time of 2.57.71, four seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

She also struck gold three more times as well as claiming a silver and being a member of the relay team who won the 200 years plus freestyle and were second in the medley.

Rose Dudeney's 1500m and 800m freestyle times, knocked off 20 and 17 seconds respectively for personal best times.

Mark Salway had a busy weekend, taking part in eight events and coming away with three golds, two silvers and two bronzes.

Braine's British record was accompanied by three silvers for 50 and 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

The next major competition will be the European championships in Cadiz in September and last weekend's results suggest that more successes are not far away.
