Haywards Heath Town’s fixture against Langney Wanderers at Eastbourne United’s ground, the Oval, has been called off, much to the bewilderment of all involved with Heath.

Boss Shaun Saunders couldn’t believe the decision when the Langney secretary phoned him early on Tuesday morning.

As soon as she got off the phone I rang our secretary as I didn’t believe her, I thought it was a hoax call.

He said: “A woman called me and said she was the secretary of Langley and that the game was going to be called off.

“She said she couldn’t get hold of our secretary and that some parts of the pitch were unplayable.

Not only the boss was surprised by the decision as players and coaches took to social media to vent their frustration.

Left-back Bailie Rogers said: “How my game is off is beyond me, what a joke.”

While coach Jason Deacon said: “I’ve played on worse.”

The postponement means that Heath have now played just 17 games and have a fixture pile up ahead of them as they have to make up five fixtures on some teams in the division.

Saunders said: “We’re desperate to get the games on.

“We don’t want a massive fixture pile-up, but Langney have played three fewer games than us, so I don’t know how they can afford to call it off.”

Despite the recent rain, Heath’s pitch remains in good condition ahead of their home fixture this weekend.

Saunders said: “Our pitch is perfect and the game will go ahead unless there is a major change in the weather.

“We’ve got a full strength squad as well so we’re looking forward to the game.”

Haywards Heath’s home fixture this weekend is against Selsey at Hanbury Park.
