Away - East Preston

Away - East Preston

Phil Gault struck twice in three second-half minutes to effectively topple East Preston from the head of the County League 1 table.

The hosts will be developing a phobia about Mid Sussex teams as it was St Francis Rangers who inflicted their first defeat of the season with a shock 1-0 win at Colwell Road at the end of October.

This time around Gault had plenty to celebrate as he broke the 100-goal barrier, the fifth man to achieve the feat since senior football came to the Beacon in 1992.

EP were unbeaten at home in the league this season but had been without a game for two and a half weeks. That showed as they tired in the closing stages and were blown away to put Robins just six points behind new leaders Peacehaven.

That is quite a turn around given the way Mickey Jewell’s side started the season. They won just once in their opening five games and failed to score in four of them.

Hassocks made just one change to the side that had comprehensively booked a spot in the Sussex Senior Cup third round with a 5-1 thrashing of Storrington in midweek, with captain Stuart Faith returning to the heart of the Robins defence after suspension.

That saw Lee Bryant shuffle from centre back to left back and Elliott Butler drop down to the bench despite impressing in four consecutive starts since returning from an injury that ruled him out for virtually all of last season.

Gault had an unusually quiet match in his 200th Hassocks appearance at Storrington but his two goals on 62 and 65 minutes were crucial at the Lashmar before Butler came off the bench to complete the scoring seven minutes from time.

Hassocks: Lehkyj; South, Marsh, Faith, Bryant; Westlake, Slaughter, Hibbert, Weston; Gault, Smith. Subs: Butler, Miles, O’Callaghan (all used)
