Nigel Adkins: Marc McNulty loan to benefit all parties

MARC McNULTY’s emergency loan switch to Pompey is ‘a great move for everybody’.

That is the opinion of Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins, after the Blades striker signed on at Fratton Park until January.

The 23-year-old front man has found himself down the pecking order at Brammall Lane, having topped the League One club’s scoring charts last season with 13 goals in all competitions.

And with summer signing Billy Sharp and promising youngster Che Adams Adkins’ strike duo of choice, the arrangement to provide McNulty with game time was a no-brainer for all concerned.

Adkins said: ‘I had to be fair to the player – he has not been playing much here recently.

‘I’ve sat down with him on a number of occasions and the one thing that has always been clear is that he has never really had more than a two-game run in the side.

‘We have to get the squad down in terms of numbers and we have a few other players out on loan.

‘I think this is a great move for everybody because Marc is going to a big club with a big crowd – similar to here – and they are also pushing for promotion.

‘He can help them and crucially for us, he is in the right environment.

‘It made business sense.’

Adkins, though, insists McNulty is not for sale.

‘Make no mistake we think Marc is a very talented young player,’ added Adkins.

‘He is under contract to us for another couple of years and I emphasise that we are not looking to get rid of him.’

McNulty goes straight into Pompey’s squad for today’s FA Cup clash with Macclesfield (3pm).
