Harriers’ men stay firmly on course

PROMOTION looks on the cards for Haywards Heath Harriers’ senior men after they maintained their healthy lead in Division 3 in the third round of the Brooks Sussex Cross Country League at Bexhill Common.

A strong showing was led by Russ Mullen as he was a high class eighth out of more than 100 runners in 28.01 for the 8k distance. Phil Radford was 25th in 30.06, just ahead of Tom Mullen 26th in 30.15.

For the veterans, Paul Cousins was 36th in 31.18, Tim Hicks 66th in 33.34 and Barry Tullet 81st in 35.22. They were followed by Steve Horn in 43.05, placing the men’s Vets team a good seventh out of 28 in the league.

Carl Bicknell recorded a 5k personal best of 20.16 at the Hove Park Run of 20.16.

Four Under 11 Harriers performed extremely well for Sussex in the South East Regional Festival for sportshall athletes in Burgess Hill. Eight county teams competed in track events, with three athletes from each county competing in field events. Both Sussex teams finished fifth.

For the girls, Mollie Beale was part of the winning team in both the 2x2 lap and 4x1 lap relays as well as finishing fifth in the standing long jump, while Derval Branagan was third in the target throw, sixth in the obstacle relay and third in the high stepper.

For the boys, Gabriel Gould was eighth in the speed bounce and 15th in the standing long jump, while Ben Wilson was 15th in both the balance test and chest push throw as well as being a member of the hurdles relay team who finished fourth.
