A MID SUSSEX youngster has won a British skiing championship by proving it is always wise to keep going.
Katya Williams produced a superb giant slalom performance to win that event by almost five seconds but thought her chances of overall victory had disappeared when she fell in the slalom the following day.
But after getting up and finishing the course in third place, she discovered her giant slalom win was enough to give her the overall best under 13 skier trophy in the children 1 age group at the British Schoolgirl races at Flaine in France last week.
The youngster, who lives near Turners Hill and attends Worth School, said afterwards: “I’m really pleased to have won but when I fell in the slalom, I really thought it was all over.
“But I decided to complete the course anyway and then I found out the giant slalom result had seen me through.”
lBurgess Hill School’s show jumping teams did well in the first inter-school event of 2012, where year 7 Katie Finnerty was second individual in the 70cm team after her and team-mate Amy Gareze (year 8) both rode double clears.
The school also turned out a 60cm team comprising Eleanor Reffin (year 7), Francesca Turner (year 6) and Poppy Barrott (year 6), who was the third member of the 70cm team.
Overall the Burgess Hill team were placed fifth
