Late pull-outs as Simon still waits for his first point

LATE withdrawals added to Haywards Heath’s problems as they faced a tough trip to strong promotion candidates Newhaven.

Heath crashed 5-1 at home to the Dockers just before Christmas and this time around slipped to a 4-0 defeat.

Simon Corless has taken on a tough job but despite failing to take a single point in his first six games in charge, he remains upbeat.

“We’ve now got a run of home game against opposition around us in the table and we need to treat this part of the season as a mini league, which we must win to preserve our status,” he said. “We certainly can turn things around.”

He drafted in one of his former players, Dominic Reason, and he emerged as Heath’s MoM, hitting the bar early on as the visitors made a bright start.

But Dockers then did likewise before going ahead through Gary Holmes after 15 minutes.

Two goals in as many minutes just after the half hour mark from Lee Robinson and Tyler Goatcher then settled the issue and Heath did well to restrict their hosts to just one more goal, scored by Robinson on 72 minutes.

Hurstpierpoint were without a game when the match referee called off their home clash with Roffey half an hour before the start because of a frozen patch on the pitch. Hurst manager Bill Clifford said: “It’s the first time anyone at Hurst can remember a game being called off at Fairfield because of a frozen pitch.”

Haywards Heath Reserves held high-flying visitors Shoreham to a 1-1 draw. They led by Williamson’s first goal for the club until a late, late equaliser.
