Major doubts over future of Sussex County League football
THE future of Sussex County League 1 football looks in severe doubt with plans to reduce the number of feeder leagues at Step 5 from 14 to 12.
Although there have been no official statements, rumours are rife that the Sussex and United Counties League are earmarked to be disbanded the season after next, with local clubs being relocated to the Kent League, Wessex League and Combined Counties.
The move may suit clubs to the north but it could mean some lengthy journeys for others. Peacehaven, for example, would possibly have to travel to Deal for a game in the Kent League.
There are real fears that the deal may already be done and with no official comments to date, rumours are rife.
The Sussex League and others have been called to a meeting in Burton-on-Trent this Sunday and have convened a meeting of all current Division 1 clubs for Ringmer on Monday.
Meanwhile, four regional meetings have been called by the FA’s Leagues Committee, with Sussex clubs being invited to send up to two representatives. That meeting is scheduled to be held in Thurrock on Sunday week (January 15), with others following in Leeds on January 22, Leicester on January 29 and Yeovil on February 12.
Most County League clubs will no doubt be hoping any such plans are shelved as if they go ahead it will mean painful and costly relocation or a drastic scaling down of their status in the national league system.
