This Saturday Burgess Hill Runners were delighted to have three teams take part in the prestigious, invite only “South Downs Way Relay”.

This 100 mile trail event starting from Beachy Head in the early hours of the morning and finishing near Winchester after a long day of running, attracts many of the running clubs in the South with usually only around 50 teams that are allowed to take part.

Burgess Hill entered a ladies team and two mixed teams, each with 6 runners who have to negotiate the beautiful South Downs Way for a total of three legs totalling between 15-20 miles per runner.

The club were enormously proud that all three teams managed to complete the event with the assistance of some fantastic behind the scenes organisation from fellow club members and some excellent support crews and drivers.

They will no doubt be hoping to be able to provide three teams again next year.

On Sunday several BHR ventured to Worthing for their re-vamped 10k race. After several years of this taking place on a week night it was moved to a weekend this year and the promise of a great PB potential attracted runners in their numbers.

Indeed, despite the early morning heat, several of the club’s runners did indeed manage a personal best. James Collins was the first BHR to finish in a superb time of 36:04 (14th place), although not quite a PB for him. He was followed by Gary Woolven (37:57 - PB), Steve Bird (39:46 - PB), James Sorbie (39:59 - PB), Leigh Smith (42:26 - PB), Dave Oldfield (45:03), Annette Maynard (47:50 - PB), Mark Craigs (48:31), Lara Maynard (49:13 - PB), Marie Carey (51:19 - PB), Paul Russell (51:37 - PB), Andy Carr (52:20), Linda Russell (52:51), Carole Mills (54:49 - PB), Kay McMenamin (54:32), Theresa Chalk (56:42 - PB), John Carey (57:18), Malcolm Slater (1:01:06), Helen Pratt (1:02:15), Helen Carr (1:05:30) and Hugh Stevenage (1:10:06).
