East Grinstead gain revenge over Mid Sussex in Queens Road Trophy

The annual Queens Road Trophy held at the Literary and Social Club saw East Grinstead gaining sweet revenge over Mid Sussex when they reversed last season’s result 10-6.

In the named doubles they took a 2-1 lead when Richard Kinnard /James Williams defeated Lee Canizzaro / Vince Elphick 86-32 and followed up with Dale Barnes and Kevin Jennings beating Kevin Ward/Mark Bright 69-42, the visitor’s pulled one back in a close encounter as Neil Baker/Neil Smith ousted Andy Carter / Dave Wexford 52-48.

This gave the Grins much confidence as they upped their game to gain a whitewash in the drawn doubles, Dale Barnes / James Bagley winning 43-28 against Chris Carter/Kevin Ward, Paul Saunders / Mick Tugwell outwitting Neil Baker/Martin Batchelor 62-51 and completing the treble Nigel Bailey/Andy Carter coming home 45-27 against Wayne Hamilton/Ian Janman.

Going into the singles 5-1 down the Middies then lost the next five frames with Vince Elphick losing out to Andy Carter 59-33, Richard Kinnard’s 62-7 success over Neil Smith, James Williams 50-43 win against Martin Batchelor,

Dale Barnes taking out Ian Janman 93-35 and Lee Cannizzaro going down 56-43 to Mick Tugwell.

The final five frames saw Mid Sussex stopping a rout when they recovered by winning them all, Chris Carter retaining his unbeaten singles record in the competition fluently defeating Kevin Jennings 52-9, Wayne Hamilton moved on to win against James Bagley 58-36, Kevin Ward notched a fine 67-33 win over Paul Saunders, Neil Baker’s 56-12 success against Nigel Bailey and to complete the nap hand, Mark Bright shone in his 65-1 victory over Dave Wexford.

During the evening the enthusiastic audience enjoyed watching fluent break building with Richard Kinnard’s 77 and 39 plus a Lee Canizzaro 31, the match was well marshalled by referees Dennis Wakeford and Steve Barton.
