Crawley’s table tennis star Kate Cheer returned from the Sainsbury’s School Games with a gold medal.

The 15-year-old Ifield Community College student helped the England South East squad to secure the team title in Manchester.

The team was dealt a blow on the eve of the competition when Commonwealth Games silver medallist Tin-Tin Ho had to withdraw with injury.

But despite being a player short they won their group and then saw off Scotland 4-0 in the semi-finals to reach the final, beating England North West 3-2.

Cheer, who players locally for Foresters, said: “It’s really good because it’s the first year here for all of us.

“It would have been nice to have Tin-Tin here but it was also nice to have a team of three and we all had to play all the time, which made us a little bit more together.”

In the individual event, Cheer reached the quarter-finals, where she was unlucky to face team-mate Denise Payet – who had lost a group match and consequently did not feature in the expected slot in the draw.
