A first breath of spring came to Cuckfield Golf Centre on Sunday.

In beautiful weather 48 people took to the course to play “Pic n Mix”, sometimes known as a Black Flag competition.

In teams of two everyone made their way to their drawn tee for a shotgun start.

Players had to opt, before their tee shot, whether they were aiming for the usual flag or the more difficultly placed Black flag.

Choosing the black meant double stableford points but it was a tougher shot for those who were attempting it.

To the sound of the local woodpecker, the sight of a pair of deer, ducks trying to find somewhere to land, all coupled at times with warm sunshine, players thoroughly enjoyed their morning.

With only one temporary green the course was in excellent condition, a testament to the hard work of the green staff.

A delicious roast lunch was on offer back at the clubhouse and everyone waited to hear the results of a very close competition.

Alan Nicholas and Owen Drake finished in second position, while Richard Turner and Julie Usher claimed the final podium spot.
