Wednesday the 2nd of September will see Rugby’s greatest Trophy, the Webb Ellis Cup come to Burgess Hill as part of its tour around the UK.
The Webb Ellis Cup is currently on a 100 day tour around the UK ahead of the Rugby World Cup which starts in September. The tour started on June 10th up in the Scottish Boarders before travelling to different locations including Coronation Street and Stonehenge. The Webb Ellis Cup’s last journey will be to Twickenham for the Opening Ceremony on 18th September, just before England kick off the tournament against Fiji.
Burgess Hill Rugby Club are teaming up with the Triangle Leisure Centre in the town to hold the open day.
Simon Lashley, Junior Chairman at the Rugby club said: “We’re absolutely delighted that it is coming to us. We’re the only place in West Sussex to hold it.
“We were fortunate to get picked out of the hat. They contacted us to see whether we wanted to do it and of course, the first thing we said was yes!”
The Webb Ellis Cup will be at event from 11am, and people are welcome to take pictures and have a glimpse of the trophy before it heads back off on its tour around 1pm.
There will also be lots of activities going on including tag rugby, Rugby Netball, and also Walking Rugby. Simon added: “One thing that always worries us about these events are parents. They bring their children down but they don’t necessarily know how the game works, so we are putting on a knowledge centre, that will include what the signals mean, what the lines mean and so on, so hopefully when they’re watching the World Cup, they will have a better idea of what is going on and hopefully enjoy it more.”
The day will start from 10am and finish around 2pm on Wednesday 2nd of September (last day of the school holidays) and the event is free! For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org
