All Blacks’ derby win keeps them on title track x
Newick (blue and red) v Burgess Hill ( black) 28.01.12
THE SUSSEX All Blacks won the derby clash at Newick on Saturday to retain their hopes of a title success.
The 25-10 victory means they are still on course despite having to face five top-half teams in their last seven matches.
They arrived with a strong line-up but neither side seriously threatened a try in the early stages, Newick going closest with a missed penalty kick.
But in the second quarter that changed and it was Burgess Hill who broke the deadlock when Daly, Rezazadeh and David were all involved before Eyre’s mesmerising run took him over.
Eyre was also behind the next score as his chip led to a penalty that Bowles slotted over to make it 8-0 to the visitors.
Newick did reply in kind before the break but the second half started well for Hill as Phillpot and McComiskey made some good breaks.
Although these came to nothing, Atkinson finally barrelled his way over to make it 13-3.
Newick were not going to lie down, however, and they scored next when punishing confusion at the line out.
A succesful conversion brought them within three points of their visitors but from there on end it was Hill who called the tune and deservedly ran out comfortable winners.
East scored the first of two late tries and then David capped a fine performance with the second.
