Batchelor hits four but second-half jitters for Saints
AFTER Chris Batchelor’s first-half hat-trick sent St Francis into the break leading 4-0, they had some nervous moments to endure before sealing a 5-4 victory over Crowborough.
After hitting 14 goals the previous Saturday, Saints were in confident mood and it showed in the first half as Batchelor’s treble and a short corner strike by Richard Ward put them in control.
A yellow card for each side gave an indication of what was to come in the second half, however, with another yellow shown to Saints after an own goal by Eric Rimmer gave Crows something to bite on.
The score was pegged back to 4-3 and there were signs of panic before a smart substitution helped improve matters as Mike Marchant rejoined the fray.
Some excellent recycling of the ball produced four passes and another fine finish by Batchelor but the contest was far from over as Crows grabbed a fourth and then piled on the pressure.
But with a certain amount of good fortune, Saints managed to hold out for a victory that leaves them third, eight points off top spot.
It was no surprise that Batchelor took the MoM award.
