British champion Martyn dedicates title to “true hero” Lee

A stunning performance in Sheffield saw Martyn Woodhead become British National Heavyweight Judo Champion for a phenomenal sixth time in a row.

The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School member was competing in the British Judo Association’s flagship event and in this Olympic year, the competition was particularly fierce with fighters from all over the UK taking part.

The delighted Hurstpierpoint College pupil said: “This was definitely the hardest competition I have ever fought in, it took all my skill and effort to win.

“This is now my sixth British National title in a row and I would like to dedicate this to Sensei Lee Osborne who passed away this month, following a valiant battle with cancer.

“He was a true hero and remains an inspiration to me, he will be missed but never forgotten. Now bring on the Europeans.”

Martyn relied on his experience and fitness to make his way to the final, where he fought a superb technical fight to be declared 2012 champion.

Roger Payne, judo coach at MSMAS said: “Martyn displays all that is best of a judo player at our school, modest yet purposeful, with a desire to perform to the best of his potential.

“Winning the British Nationals confirms that, but winning it six times says far more.

“In a year when our Dojo has lost one of its own, it is good to see one of our younger players living up to the legacy of those no longer with us. Long may his success continue.”
